International solidarity in Adelaide

ADELAIDE -- International solidarity activists here celebrated May Day at a dinner hosted by the Democratic Socialist Party on May 5.

Sixty people gathered at the Resistance Centre to toast workers' struggles around the globe. Activists from Aksi -- Indonesia Action Solidarity, Bougainville Action Group, Committees in Solidarity with Central America and the Caribbean, Australian Aid for Ireland, the Campaign for an Independent East Timor and a representative of the African National Congress attended.

A feature of the evening was a speech and performance of songs and poetry by the Buklod Kababaihang Filipina Group Ensemble, which highlighted the plight of Filipina women as overseas contract workers, mail-order brides and immigrants.

The dinner also launched a campaign to expose the links between the ACTU and the government-run union in Indonesia, the SPSI. Any unionist wanting to support the campaign can contact Aksi on (08) 231 6982.
