Green It Up features Pinkenba case

By Bill Mason

BRISBANE -- Green It Up, a weekly musical night at the Shamrock Hotel, Fortitude Valley, featured the Pinkenba case on Thursday April 6. Sponsored by Resistance, Green It Up is a regular fundraiser for Green Left Weekly, but often the evenings are co-sponsored with other progressive movement organisations.

Recent examples have included the International Women's Day Collective and the Free Education Network.

The Pinkenba night was a joint fundraiser for GLW and the Aboriginal Legal Service to help continue the campaign for justice for Aboriginal youth.

Last May 10, three Aboriginal teenagers were abducted by police in the Valley Mall and abandoned at Pinkenba, near the mouth of the Brisbane River. Despite confessions by the police involved, none were tried for the crimes they were accused of.

ALS chairperson Sam Watson told the Green It Up audience that the struggle for justice for the Pinkenba youth would continue, with possible private prosecutions to proceed.

Lionel Fogarty spoke movingly of the death of Daniel Yock in police custody in 1993 and of the Yock family's ongoing determination to seek justice over this crime.

Fogarty read poetry on the theme of Aboriginal people's struggle for their rights.

Music for the night was presented by Dawn Daylight, Chris Anderson and the Impressionists.
