Journalist fights for job

By Sean Lennon

MELBOURNE -- The campaign by US journalist Sandy Nelson to get her job back has received international support.

In 1990 Nelson was moved to a non-reporting, copy editing job on the Morning News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington, because of her involvement in a gay rights campaign. Management at the paper had earlier attempted to impose a code of conduct on reporters which included a ban on any off-duty political involvement.

The Sandy Nelson Defence Committee, founded in October 1990, has drawn support from US unions and journalists overseas. For information, or to help the Sandy Nelson Campaign, phone (03) 386 5065 or write to PO Box 266, West Brunswick Vic 3055.
