Power station flouted pollution law

By Bill Mason

BRISBANE -- State officials permitted the government-owned Gladstone power station to pollute the area for 18 years, without effective controls, documents obtained by the Courier-Mail have revealed.

The report, published on October 29, showed that the power station, Queensland's largest, broke air pollution limits for up to 40 days a year while run by the Electricity Commission.

The station has now been sold to Comalco for $1.7 billion.

Although local residents complained about pollution breaches for years, they could never get access to records. The plant had never been prosecuted throughout this time.
