CSIRO staff work in

BRISBANE -- The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation division of tropical and animal production facility at Long Pocket, on 7.2 hectares of prime riverfront land, is under threat of closure with retrenchment of 23 staff.

The property is expected to be sold for residential development.

The plan has angered CSIRO staff and primary producers, who have vowed to fight the proposal.

Public Sector Union CSIRO Long Pocket delegate Steven Davis said on May 31 that workers were irate at the ``ever-increasing downward spiral. Everyone is uncertain what the future holds. It's a very worrying time for staff.

``The closure is hard to believe. The CSIRO has such excellent facilities here.''

Staff held a work-in, beginning on the evening of June 2, the 25th anniversary of the opening of the laboratories.
