ADELAIDE -- The Hills Face Network has had a small victory in preventing development in this important area of the Adelaide Hills. The Development Assessment Commission has rejected plans for a $3 million residential subdivision on access and aesthetic criteria. The network argued that construction would cause environmental damage through run-off and vehicle access. The CFMEU supported the campaign by placing a “green ban” on the area.

BRISBANE -- More than 1000 people attended a candlelight vigil here as part of an international day in support of people living with AIDS and to commemorate those who have died of the disease, on May 21 at Southbank Parklands. Ken Hayward, state health minister, a person living with AIDS and a church representative spoke movingly of the struggle to overcome the AIDS epidemic.

  • Around 130 people packed into the Resistance Centre here on May 21 to view Death of a Nation: The Timor Conspiracy, a film by world-renowned journalist John Pilger and David Munro. The film recounts the tragic saga of genocide by the Indonesian military regime in East Timor, and the treachery and complicity of US, British and Australian political leaders over the past 20 years.
