Angry protest over Grand Prix

25 May 1994

By Bronwen Beechey

MELBOURNE -- At least 10,000 people rallied on May 15 in opposition to the holding of the 1996 Australian Formula One Grand Prix in inner-suburban Albert Park.

Premier Jeff Kennett also turned up, but didn't stay long. Surrounded by jeering protesters shouting abuse, Kennett had to be escorted away by 15 police. The Herald Sun described it as one of the worst receptions given to a Victorian premier since the anti-hanging protests against Sir Henry Bolte.

Since the announcement last December that Victoria had ``stolen'' the Grand Prix from South Australia, opposition to the use of Albert Park for the race has grown steadily.
