Salisbury campus threatened with closure

By Melanie Sjoberg

ADELAIDE -- Salisbury, a working-class suburb in the north of Adelaide, is facing the closure of its only access to tertiary courses.

It is planned to transfer the Salisbury award-based courses of the University of South Australia to a new city campus as a consolidation of programs and capital expenditure. Many of the courses offered are community and/or social justice oriented.

The Salisbury Students Association has objected to a lack of meaningful consultation, with the decisions being made within the leadership confines of the university. The association says that this represents a violation of access and equity principles.

Currently 71% of the student population are women, and of those 23% are mature age. The campus also conducts a program for Aboriginal and Islander students.

A “Save Salisbury Campus” working party has been established which has called for a rally on Friday, May 20, 11.30am on the steps of Parliament House. Phone 302 5115 for details.
