Submarine workers win

ADELAIDE -- Workers at the Australian Submarine Corporation returned to work on May 10 after a successful 43-day strike.

The strike began on March 28 after seven workers were sacked by Transfield, a contractor at the site, for vocally opposing a proposed enterprise bargaining agreement.

The return to work deal included the reinstatement of those sacked, a $30 a week pay increase backdated to January 4 and back pay for four public holidays.

Jack Weston, the sacked shop steward, told Green Left Weekly that the action was a success due to the support gathered and provided by the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union.

During the campaign over $20,000 was raised to support the striking workers and their families.
