Peter Hicks at the Sitting Duck

23 March 1994

The next offering from Brisbane's Sitting Duck Folk Club is Peter Hicks, returning on March 27 to his native Queensland (born in Chinchilla in 1964), from his present home of Sydney.

Peter has made a significant impact on the national folk scene with his original songs on issues of contemporary struggle, both Australian and international -- with Bougainville and Timor as recent themes. He and his band, the Born Again Pagans, liven up many functions.

The Toothfaeries will be the support band. This is a Brisbane-based four-piece band playing contemporary acoustic music with influences from African, reggae and folk. Its first recording is a cassette, Zen Dentistry, released last month.

The Sitting Duck Folk Club, sponsored by the Queensland Folk Federation, aims to provide a venue for folk performers of many different cultures, styles and philosophies.

The Sitting Duck Cafe is host to an array of cultural and community events, from serious poetry to serious fun. From cabaret to politics, to poetry, to art openings and back to music theme nights, the Sitting Duck Cafe sees itself “on the cutting edge of grass roots support for local, national and international alternative culture”, says folk club organiser Kerryanne Farrer.

The cafe is located upstairs at 165 Boundary Street, West End. The performance by Peter Hicks, supported by the Toothfaeries begins at 7.00pm on Sunday, March 27. Admission is $5/$4 concession (including students, unemployed, Green Left Weekly subscribers, Triple Z subscribers, QFF members).
