Qld students lose free transport

By Nikki Ulasowski

BRISBANE -- Public meetings were held last week in a number of schools over the state Labor government cutting access to free public transport for students travelling to school.

The government has announced that unless students are attending the school nearest their home, they will no longer receive free public transport.

Students received accounts from the government for up-front travel costs. These accounts range from $80 to $800.

The charges have caused uproar. Five public meetings have averaged an attendance of 150. The meetings have demanded that students receive free public transport for both rail and bus travel (in both private and public schools), and that students be allowed to chose the school they want to attend, according to their needs. Public meetings will be continuing this week.
