What to do on a Saturday night in any major city in Australia? You could always sit in front of the TV and watch the winter Olympics. Perhaps a video is more your style. Anything to avoid mixing it with the crowds at the local pub band night.
Well, what about an alternative? Almost any Saturday night in cities where Green Left Weekly is distributed there will be a cultural event to raise money for the paper. You could enjoy good music, see a radical film or even participate in the creation of radical art.
On Saturday, February 18, in Sydney, Green Left and Actively Radical TV held a joint benefit to raise funds for projects to publicise the democratic struggle in South Africa.
The night was a great success. Not simply because five separate groups of performers gave their time and energy to the project. Not simply because more than 200 people coming through the door made the night a financial success.
The night was also an artistic success. Actively Radical TV began production of its video on South Africa on the night by filming and projecting the entire performance.
The participation of ARTV in the project added a new dimension to the cultural identity of Green Left Weekly.
Next Saturday night, why be content to watch the trite antics of Liz on the winter Olympics? Why not participate in the creation of radical culture? Green Left Weekly -- it's your paper.
