Mexico donates school pads for Cuban children

HAVANA -- The Mexican government has donated three million note pads for school children in Cuba. A Mexican official in Havana, Cristina de la Garza, says the donation will help to support Cuba's efforts in the field of education.

She said it is really an admirable achievement that, despite the economic crisis the country is experiencing, not one school has been closed down.

The donation was handed over on January 20 at a ceremony hosted at a school complex in Havana bearing the name of Mexican patriot Benito Juarez.

Cuba's education minister, Luis Gomez, attending the event, highlighted the symbolic and material significance of the Mexican government's gesture. He said it will help to cover the 30 million note pads needed to complete the current school year. Cuba has some 2.5 million students enrolled in its education system, and over one fifth of its budget goes to fund educational requirements.
