Adelaide EYA meets

By Trish Corcoran

ADELAIDE -- Forty young people attended the Environmental Youth Alliance state meeting on Saturday, March 27. They discussed campaigns to take up in the next few months and the approaching EYA national conference.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to supporting environmental struggles in the Third World”, said Emma Webb, a spokesperson for the group. “This is very important because it is so obvious that we are facing a global crisis and we can't just narrow ourselves to local environmental problems.”

Adelaide EYA is also concerned with environmental issues in the city. “We held a workshop on the situation with public transport in Adelaide and came to the conclusion that it is far from the standard that we need”, Webb said.

Public transport is becoming more difficult to rely on. This isolates a huge number of young people who have no other means of transport. Services do not run after midnight, and many outer suburban services have either been privatised or cut completely. It is also becoming quite expensive.

EYA plans to make public transport the focus for World Environment Day. If you would like to help EYA organise the World Environment Day events, phone Trish or Emma on 231 6982.
