Poetry for the jobless

By Stephen Bavaro

SYDNEY -- The Unemployed People's Embassy, based in the inner southern suburbs of Marrickville and St. Peters, has established the Poetry Party.

A spokesperson for the UPE said that the idea was to “get people interested in original poetry together to do various readings and media projects throughout the year”.

One of these events is the annual Poetry Party picnic, held in November at Enmore park. The event was videotaped, and the videotape is available for hire from Marrickville Council Library, or can be purchased. Another reading was at the Redfern Festival in February.

Unemployed people can join for no cost, while for others the membership cost is $5. The next reading will take place on Saturday, March 27, at Redfern Park as part of Youth Week. For further information, phone (02) 557 3799.
