New world music mag

27 January 1993

New world music mag

The first issue of Culture (formerly Isis) has hit the streets. Culture describes itself as a “roots music magazine” and concentrates on African music and reggae.

Judging from the depth of information, range of articles and politically progressive analysis in the first issue, the collective who produce the magazine are a dedicated and enthusiastic bunch. No follower of roots music should ignore this publication.

Featured in the first issue are articles on South African reggae star Lucky Dube, Britain-based Dub poets Linton Kwesi Johnson and Benjamin Zephaniah, Zairean soukous great Kanda Bongo Man and Jamaican producer/singer Yami Bolo. The magazine also profiles several Australian reggae bands including Earth Reggae, Shakey Roots, I 'n' I Time and Errol H. Renaud from Caribbean Soul.

There is a fascinating feature on the culture of the Yoruba people of south-western Nigeria and a story on Spike Lee's Malcolm X film.

Culture includes a books and poetry section, a useful contact list for local roots bands, mouth-watering African recipes, a gig guide and a comprehensive listing of black music radio programs in Sydney.

Culture is available by subscription for $15 per year. Write to PO Box 236, Dulwich Hill NSW 2203, or phone (02) 560 7783 for more information.
