Sunday night in Brunswick

By Sean Lennon

MELBOURNE -- Every Sunday night in Brunswick, music cooperative “One C One” puts on concerts at the Mechanics Institute. One C One provides music which is non-commercial and acoustic and caters to a variety of tastes. Tiddas, Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter have all played at One C One.

Marion Cincotta, one of the organisers of the cooperative, told Green Left Weekly that One C One started out in 1976 with its first venue being the Princes Hill High School. One C One was the name of the classroom where the concerts were first held and, by coincidence, it also was the postal box address of the group.

The cooperative moved in 1986 to the Troubador in Brunswick St, Fitzroy. Following a fire, it moved in 1990 to its present site with the help of Brunswick Council.

Cincotta said the group has no formal structure. Members “ring each other up” to work out what bands to put on. Anyone who wants to can get involved and do as much or as little as they wish. Tasks such as setting up the venue are rotated among the volunteers month by month.

One C One also does benefits such as the East Timor benefit coming up on November 7. Another benefit, by Sydney-based performer Peter Hicks on November 21, is for community-occupied Northland and Richmond Secondary Colleges. The cooperative can be contacted by ringing Donald, 347 7515, or Marion, 496 5616.
