Adelaide universities go out

By Alison Dellit

ADELAIDE -- Academics from all three South Australian universities joined the national strike on October 18.

The president of the Adelaide University Staff Association, Rod Crowther, said that the vice chancellors' proposals essentially obliterated the entire award, and provided mechanisms for the universities to get rid of academics who wouldn't agree to cost cutting measures.

He described the employers' AHEIA as “a parasitic body full of economic rationalists”.

Pickets were set up on Flinders University and most campuses of the University of South Australia. The Whyalla campus of USA was closed for the day. Many students were turned away on Flinders, causing traffic problems in the region, and the unions declared the strike a success.
