US blockade of Cuba opposed

PANAMA CITY -- Cuba has taken its case against the

United States' 30-year blockade to the Group of 77,

made up of developing countries.

The head of Cuba's delegation, Angel Gomez Trueba,

attending a meeting of the Group of 77 Follow-Up

Committee in Panama City, told participants on

September 1 that the blockade is wrecking living

conditions for Cubans.

Gomez Trueba noted that his country is also the object

of a systematic disinformation campaign originating in

Washington. The meeting was opened on August 31 by

Panamanian President Guillermo Endara.

Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic participants in a

meeting of the Socialist International condemned the

US blockade and the neo-liberal economic policies

currently being implemented in Latin America. Speaker

after speaker called for the scrapping of the

blockade, which they say is a relic of the past.

They say they would like to see normalisation of

relations between the two countries. Some 50 delegates

representing 23 Latin American political parties are

taking part in the Socialist International

meeting.
