Public transport campaign

BRISBANE -- Brisbane Environmental Youth Alliance launched its Public Transport Campaign on November 4 as part of Youth Week '92.

More than 70 people attended the “Anti Traffic Jam” -- a public transport band night that featured the Hot Potatoes, One Straw, Phil Monsour, poetry and open platform -- on November 5.

A highlight was a seminar entitled “Too Many Cars?” addressed by the state minister for transport, David Hamill, alderperson for public transport Maureen Hayes, Trevor Campbell (Australian Railways Union), David Matters (tram and bus union), Phil Hayward (QUT Planning Department), Philippa Stanford (EYA) and a number of community groups interested in public transport.

The aims of this week were to look at the negative impact of private car use on the environment and quality of life, to explore possible alternatives and to work out what young people can do about it. The demands of the campaign are for cheap, safe and accessible public transport.
