Battered wife freed

LONDON -- Kiranjit Ahluwalia was released from prison on September 25. Her murder conviction, for killing her brutal husband, had been quashed on July 31, and her plea of guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility was now accepted. Her sentence was three years and four months, exactly the time she had already spent in prison.

Southall Black Sisters, a women's rights group, built a strong public campaign for her release. Ahluwalia is going to join the campaign group to fight for women who have had similar experience to her.

Button your lip, minister

Irish cabinet discussions are, according to a recent Supreme Court ruling, absolutely confidential and cannot be revealed by anyone -- not even the ministers involved.

A tribunal of inquiry into a scandal in the beef industry summoned ministers and former cabinet ministers to give evidence. They appealed against the summons, and the Supreme Court declared that no minister could be questioned about cabinet discussions, even voluntarily.

Green Party in Morocco

Attempts to found a Moroccan green party were prevented on September 18 by a police raid. Forty people present in a hotel, near Casablanca, were detained by police. They were released after being warned that the party was not officially sanctioned and was therefore illegal.
