Brown speaks in Wollongong

WOLLONGONG -- Following the formal launch of the Greens political party (see page 5), Tasmanian MP Bob Brown spoke to a meeting of more than 100 people here on September 2.

Addressing the meeting, organised by the Illawarra Greens, Brown stressed the importance of links between future Green parliamentarians and strong community-based organisations to prevent MPs losing touch with the community.

A notable part of the discussion was the view promoted by big business that greens are anti-jobs. Brown conceded that the movement had a way to go to redress this image, but stated that the greens must have a commitment to jobs that are valuable to society as a whole, not just for the amount of profit they create.

Illawarra Greens spokesperson Steve Brigham told the meeting that the Greens would be standing candidates in the electorates of Cunningham and Gilmore in the next federal election.
