Apology to Senator Michael Tate

In the Green Left Weekly of 1st April, 1992 an article was published under the headline “Cops raid Launceston jobless group” which referred to a raid on the offices of the Unemployed Workers Union in Launceston on 19th March, 1992 by the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Taxation Office. The article also referred to the fact that Senator Michael Tate, as Minister for Justice in the Federal government, was responsible for the Federal Police and was known to bear a political grudge against the Unemployed Workers Union.

Green Left Weekly and the author did not intend to suggest that Senator Tate instructed the Federal Police to conduct the raid in question and accept that any such suggestion would be completely false and without foundation. They also accept that Senator Tate had no knowledge of the raid in question until after it had been conducted by the Federal Police.

Green Left Weekly and the author apologise to Senator Tate for any embarrassment or distress that he has suffered as a result of this article.
