Calls for solidarity with Cuba
The World Federation of Trade Unions is calling for 1992 to be the Year of Solidarity with Cuba. In a statement, the WFTU says trades unions and other organisations worldwide must do their best to inform people about the reality of the Cuban situation.
It linked labour struggles with those of the Cuban people to survive and move ahead amidst the world economic crisis and the collapse of the socialist camp. The WFTU singled out the US economic blockade of the island for special criticism and stressed that capitalism does not have the answers to the problems confronting workers today.
In Mexico City, Ricardo Valero, who heads the Foreign Relations Commission of Mexico's Chamber of Deputies, says that by stepping up its blockade against Cuba, Washington has confirmed its position as the top violator of international law.
Valero told the Mexican daily Uno Mas Uno that the issue is a very delicate one for Mexico and could indicate what the United States has in mind for trade relations with its southern neighbor. He noted that President Bush's recent call for tightening the blockade against Cuba is detrimental to the sovereignty of other countries involved in trade talks with the US.
Venezuelan Senator Pompeyo Marquez has also condemned Washington's stepped-up blockade against Cuba. Speaking to Prensa Latina news agency, he said that Cuba has the right to self-determination and to solve its owns problems. He added that, despite US attempts to isolate Cuba, worldwide solidarity is pouring into the island.
