Republicans commemorate Easter rebellion

29 April 1992

By John Tully

MELBOURNE - Supporters of the Irish Republican movement commemorated the 76th anniversary of the Easter Rebellion against British rule at Melbourne general cemetery.

The 70-strong crowd marched on April 19 to the graves of exiled Republicans, where a message from Sinn Fein was read out declaring its determination to fight on, despite the loss of Republican leader Gerry Adams' West Belfast seat in the recent British elections.

A member of Australian Aid for Ireland gave an oration linking the struggle for Irish freedom to the contribution made by Irish Australians in building a labour movement and democracy here.

The ceremony concluded with two minutes' silence for the Republican dead, and the laying of wreaths.
