Forum discusses censorship

By Tyrion Perkins

BRISBANE -- “Students, Sex, and Censorship” was the title of a public meeting held at the Resistance Centre on April 4.

High school student Andrew Strachan spoke about the lack of straightforward sex information available to high school students and the great need for this information.

Carolyn Davies, from Student Initiatives in Community Health, described the way SICH funding had been discontinued because of a page in its magazine Catalyst.

Darryl O'Donnell, from Gays and Lesbians on Campus, said that information on sex is a matter of life and death considering the problem of AIDS. The government is in effect killing people by not allowing information on safe sex for all ages to be available and not allowing those with HIV to obtain drugs that could help their life quality.

Resistance member Terese Van Twest described the banning of the Fact and Fantasy File diary as hypocritical considering the pornographic material that surrounds us.

Discussion centered on methods of getting the information on sex to young people, such as by Fantastic Sex Facts, now being distributed at high schools by Resistance.
