Protests against French warship

4 March 1992

SYDNEY -- Peace Squadron member Ian Carswell was arrested on February 22 after painting “Nuclear Free Pacific” in fluorescent red paint on the bow of the French Warship Garonne.

Carswell said: “My actions were motivated by a desire to communicate with the French at a level they understood about my abhorrence at the forthcoming May series of nuclear tests at Moruroa and by other similar attitudes to Pacific culture.”

The Peace Squadron will campaign against seven US warships expected in Australia in May as part of ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea. For information about future activities, contact Robert Samsa on (02) 316 5790. Photograph by Glenn Lockitch.
