Art for the wilderness

By Bill Mason

BRISBANE -- Avant GARD, “an urgent event for the Sarawak rainforests”, was launched on January 31 at Space Plenitude, an alternative art gallery here. The environmental art exhibition, featuring more than 50 works with a general ecological theme, runs until February 8, at level 1, 43 Adelaide Street, City.

Speakers at the launch included state environment minister Pat Comben, Sally Mckinnon and Greg Thornton. Music was provided by Heironymous Bosch, Crazy Moon and Monesque.

The exhibition was staged by GARD, “the Group Against Rainforest Destruction, a volunteer-based, non-profit, non-violent action group, dedicated to reducing the horrendous rate of rainforest devastation in South East Asia”, Nathan Laurent, an organiser of the event told Green Left Weekly.

“It was conceived to raise funds for a `Good Wood Seminar' in March, aimed at developing public awareness of alternatives to tropical timbers.”

Food, drinks and entertainment will be provided on the exhibition's closing night, February 8, featuring music by Ruth Apelt and Vic Farrell.
