Middle East coalition established

By Sue Bull

SYDNEY -- Despite media rumours that the peace movement has packed up shop due to the US victory in the Gulf War, a new group here -- Middle East Action Coalition -- has called for a picket on Thursday, May 2, to protest against the lack of aid for the war's victims.

Nobody has been fooled by George Bush's rhetoric about peace being brought to the region by the Gulf War. For the Palestinians, the Kurds and all the other victims of this brutal and costly war, life only appears to have become worse. Hence the need for ongoing solidarity work with the peoples of the region.

MEAC aims to oppose outside interference and imperialist intervention in the region; to support the peoples' struggles for self-determination and human rights; to educate and inform the Australian community about such issues; and to build links between the people of the Middle East and the Australian community.

The coalition will meet monthly, with the next meeting on Thursday, May 16, 6 p.m., at Trades Hall. MEAC has also begun to investigate the possibility of taking part in an International War Crimes Tribunal to expose US crimes throughout the Gulf War.
