Call to end use of traps

SYDNEY -- Animal rights activists demonstrated outside Parliament House on October 24 to protest against the use of the steel-jaw leg-hold trap in New South Wales.

The traps are theoretically banned under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, but a loophole under the Pastures Protection Act allows the trap to be used.

The trap has been banned in 66 countries both because of the cruelty involved in its use and because it does not discriminate between the species it catches.

A spokesperson for Save Animals From Exploitation, Scott Cardimatis, said that he had recently collected photographic evidence of animals caught by the trap in national parks, 80% of which were protected species.
