CJC recommends decriminalising prostitution

BRISBANE -- The Queensland Criminal Justice Commission, handing down its report on prostitution on October 2, recommended the decriminalisation of brothels employing up to 10 prostitutes.

It also recommended that all brothels and single prostitutes be registered by a board responsible to the health minister and that there be regular health checks for workers and clients.

In a bid to restrict organised crime in the sex industry, the report calls for a prohibition on multiple ownerships of brothels.

The report has been tabled in parliament for three months.

When asked to respond to the CJC proposals and market research by the commission which revealed that 60% of Queenslanders are in favour of decriminalising prostitution, Premier Wayne Goss said that he found it hard to believe that Queenslanders wished to live next to brothels!
