War on waste

Friends of the Earth has declared Thursday November 21 a national “War on Waste” day. Last year's inaugural Waste Busters Day encouraged groups and individuals throughout the country to address local waste issues. Suggested activities ranged from “saying no to plastic bags” to “protesting against major polluters.”

“This year we hope to build on the strong foundation laid last year and develop the theme of waste avoidance with some practical and worthwhile examples”, says Peter Hopper, Waste Busters Day national coordinator.

FoE is encouraging people to look hard at three areas of waste-producing activity: transport, packaging and Christmas.

The group urges people to consider alternatives to car ownership, to avoid packaging wherever possible and to “recapture some of the lost spirit of Christmas with thoughtful rather than wasteful gifts and actions”. For more information, contact Peter Hopper on (02) 281 4070.
