Action against dumps

By Mark Cronin

BRISBANE -- The Southside Action Group, formed to fight the Rochedale Dump, is organising a “People's Rights Day”, with a protest outside the Queensland parliament on Wednesday, October 9.

Opponents of the proposed toxic waste dump near Miles and the radioactive waste dump at Beerburrum/Esk will join SAG in the action.

Other community groups which feel aggrieved by bad environmental decisions and broken promises, like the “Toll-Buster” group and the opponents of the Byfield sand mining project, will also attend. The opposition to the three dumps can only be strengthened by this show of solidarity.

The Southside Action Group is still fighting the Brisbane City Council in the courts over the Rochedale Dump. Despite ex-lord mayor Sally-Anne Atkinson's pre-emptive signing of the dump contract with Pacific Waste Management only days before her ousting in the Brisbane City Council election, and despite Labor Lord Mayor Jim Soorley's back-down on the issue since his election, the group is still confident of winning its case.
