Qld Labor follows Goss on `land rights'

Roberto Jorquera

BRISBANE -- The state ALP has modified its policy on Aboriginal land rights to conform to the “Clayton's” land right legislation recently passed by the government of Premier Wayne Goss.

The party's state conference passed the new policy unanimously. Like the legislation, which Aboriginal leaders have condemned as providing “land rights for mining companies”, it provides for no land acquisition fund, no compensation, no veto over mining, no urban land, no recognition of Aboriginal law and no Aboriginal control of royalties.

At the conference, Goss said “There may not be all of the things some people sought, but what has been achieved is of significant importance”. The mining companies no doubt agree.
